Considering Sirrus Satellite Service?
If you are thinking about purchasing a Sirius Satellite radio receiver you might be interested to know ...
Dueling Fools: Sirius Bear Rebuttal [Fool.com: Commentary] July 21, 2005: "Sirius Satellite (Nasdaq: SIRI) also has a single, critical flaw, making this investment unsafe at any price. Assume that Rick's 20 million subscribers are not a pipe dream. Assume it could happen. And assume that $7 is a low price to pay for the profits that Sirius could earn off of all those subscribers. Even taking all those assumptions at face value, how many of those 20 million subscribers will stick around after Sirius' uninsured satellites go kaput and the company doesn't have the cash to replace them? Zero.
And what will the company be worth when that happens? Also zero.
All it takes to cripple Sirius is for one satellite to break down. If two satellites break down, the company dies, taking your investment with it. If Sirius' management isn't going to -- or can't afford to -- insure the interests of its shareholders, you can't afford to own Sirius. At any price."

Eric Meyer on CSS
Using @import Restrictions

If you've ever struggled with Netscape Navigator 4.x, this trick is for you. It all hinges on the fact that NN4.x doesn't understand what @import means. This is by far the most widely used trick, even though it's only good for hiding external style sheets.

Old Explorers
@import is also not understood by IE3/Win and IE4/Win, if that's a concern for you.
Consider the following style sheet:

A few things here will cause trouble or otherwise be useless in NN4.x. Most obviously, NN4.x doesn't understand a:hover rules because it was released before :hover made its way into the CSS specification. It also has trouble with :active. These aren't necessarily major problems because NN4.x will pretty much ignore these rules. There is a much bigger problem, unfortunately: The application of padding to hyperlinks.

For some reason, NN4.x seems to assume that any element that's been given padding (or borders or margins) must be a block-level element. Thus, the styles set up here will cause hyperlinks to break up whatever element they're found within and possibly overlap other pieces of the document. So you definitely can't have NN4.x seeing the padding declaration in your CSS.

Here's the solution: Take the Navigator-unfriendly styles and move them into a separate file (call it adv-styles.css, for example). That would give you:

a:link, a:visited {padding: 1px 0.5em;}
a:hover {color: red; background: yellow;}
a:active {color: yellow; background: red;}
This leaves you with a somewhat pared-down style sheet:

Now all you have to do is import the styles you just removed.

XHTML Primer

XHTML: Guidelines
All developers are familiar with HTML, the web’s original markup language. But the W3C currently recommends using XHTML instead. This hybrid language looks and works much like HTML but is based on XML, the web’s “super” markup language.

Ulrich Schnauss

A Strangely Isolated Place

Just heard more Ulrich Schnauss on DI.FM and couldn't resist. I purchased the cd from Amazon. I rarely purchase CDs anymore but this one is definitely worth adding to the collection. The track that made the decision for me was Letter From Home. I have linked to the Amazon listing for the cd. If you haven't heard of Ulrich, read the reviews and listen to the intros.

CSS.Styled.Form.Controls
As you may or may not know there have always been two common form controls that have completely evaded styling.

Typically, textareas, buttons and text fields have been easy enough to style and the functionality to use images as buttons is inherant to HTML
